STAY AWAY FROM SYMANTEC! Their techs don't have a clue. Whatever you do DO NOT let them use their remote system to access and make changes to your PC. My system was completely crashed by the tech service people in India. It cost me hundreds of dollars to have a new operating system installed on a new hard drive to attempt to recover my data! All I got from Symantec was "sorry there is nothing more we can do for you, call the manufacturer of your computer"
You have all been warned!
I have just spent 1/2 hour with their India tech support. I explained the issue was the PC has slowed considerably since the 2006 upgrade. I had found a listing of logs and such and asked the lady how to bring them back up to discuss some of the items with her. She asked me if I was calling with the desire to purchase a log.......It is just amazing and sad to see these things happen. She told me that it would cost me $30 to continue talking with a senior tech support person to fix the problem that their program is causing. I asked for the US Corp number and she told me that if I wanted to talk to a US technician it would cost me $69 dollars and that she would not give me the Corp HQ phone number. The days of reliable tech support have gone away. For this company to export this support for a product that is critical to protecting us from the scum of the earth and not to have the trainging such that they even understand what we are asking is just unacceptable. As the previous post sad, "You have all been warned".
Symantec and the merry band of cobra chockers have done too much damage to so many machines, I do not see how they can hide it. I am going to try the media to alert people about this outragous treatment of many long time customers and see if the pressure can be put to bear where it will do the most good. So much for out sourcing support. Another BAD example of cutting costs only to find it was not worth the effort. How Symantec can actually ask people to pay for support after what has happened, well you get what you pay for. I have seen too many of these so called code writing wizards from India who buy the degree and import themselves only to become a disgrace when it comes time to perform. Symantec may not be able to recover from this one anytime soon unless they correct each and every system they have damaged.
Symantec's Norton anti virus is one of the worst on the market. Believe it or not, almost all free anti virus software scores higher then Norton (in controlled tests). Not only that their virus definitions are poor, their application suite hogs system resources. I have to disagree with the "You get what you pay for" statement because I have paid nothing and have had great protection for the last three years. Don't even let me say anything about tech support. I worked in a call center for HP and I had to quit, Its policy not to give good support.
I have been trying to cancel my Norton anti virus for the past two weeks. When I originally called on January 10, 2008 to cancel, there was no charge to speak to a representative. Now,on January 26 there is a $9.00 charge to speak to someone. I have spent hours on line in attempts to follow the cancel directions. I have sent e-mails, and will now send a certified return receipt letter to confirm cancellation.
I have used Norton/Symantec for the past few years and have been very happy with it.
I re-subscribed because I was notified by Norton that I had no security system and was in danger of virus...etc. I didn't know at that time that I already had McAfee, which is the reason I'm cancelling. Now that I've read all of the dissatisfaction with Norton I can understand why this has been such a difficult process to go through. I thought it was because I'm a novice computer user.
It is shocking to read about all of the difficulties people have had with this company.
1. Task and settings
2. Change advanced settings
3. Virus & spyware protection settings
4. Uncheck turn on auto-protect
5. you will be asked to select a time for norton to reactivate,(eg. 1 hour * 5 hours * on reboot)
