"system is trying to comunicate via protocol 46"

Daniel SRNovember 29th, 2003, 06:17 AMI have outpost 2 in my pc and an outpost warning window saying that my system was tryin to comunicate via protocol 46 popped up. I don't know what protocol 46 is so I blocked it. What is it? Is it a legit system comunication? Should I unblock this process?snapdraginNovember 29th, 2003, 07:53 AMHi Daniel and welcome to Wilders :)

i'm afraid i cannot help you much as i do not know what "protocol 46" is, but i do know that it is always wise to block an application trying to communicate out to the internet until you know exactly what it is, why it wants connection, and what it wants connection with.

What operating system are you using, and do you remember what you were working on, or what applications were running at the time OutPost gave you the warning? That information would be helpful.

But in the meantime, i would keep it blocked until one of the experienced firewall Moderators, or Members, can come in and advise you what "protocol 46" is all about.

snaprootNovember 29th, 2003, 08:48 AMI think it has to do with RSVP. No harm in blocking it, I think.
'If you get it again, you might send the question the Agnitum support.
Pete tried to get an answer on it at the support forum, but no one there is really familiar with it.
In case you don't know the support forum is outpostfirewall.com/forum/DouglasNovember 29th, 2003, 08:59 AMHi Daniel SR,

Root sure knows his stuff!

From Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=253169

{QUOTE-> # Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP)
This traffic uses IP protocol 46 and is used to provide Quality Of Service (QoS) in Windows 2000. Exemption of RSVP traffic is a requirement to allow QOS markings for traffic that may be secured by IPSec. <-QUOTE}

DouglasDaniel SRNovember 29th, 2003, 01:35 PMThanks for the help.

Yep root was right. I think I'll keep it blocked for now, well at least until a big window pops up screamin "UNBLOCK THE PROTOCOL 46 NOW!!!" lol

I have Win XP Pro (without SP1), but i really can't remember what I was doing at the time the window popped up....my browser (firebird 0.7...which by the way is the coolest browser ever) was opened..that's for sure.

I guess it's a good sign the fact Outpost warned me about it, isn't it?

Well, thanks again..this forum is great...greetings from São Paulo/Brasil.MickeyTheManNovember 29th, 2003, 02:04 PMSome info on the Internet Message Protocol

The IP protocol 46 (RSVP) traffic was likely associated to the Quality of Service (QoS) functionality/service in W2K and XP.

The following link explains a little more about it:
